If you have been told that you have Sevvai Dosham (also called Kuja Dosham or Mangal Dosha), you may have felt worried, especially when marriage is being discussed. The truth is that this dosham is far more common and far less frightening than people make it sound. This guide explains what it means, how it is checked and what traditional remedies are followed.

What is Sevvai Dosham?

In Vedic astrology, Sevvai (Mars) is the planet of energy, courage, passion and action. When Mars is placed in certain houses of your birth chart (jathagam), it is said to create Sevvai Dosham.

The houses usually considered are the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from the Lagna (ascendant). Many astrologers also check the position from the Moon and from Venus.

Why is it linked to marriage?

Mars is a fiery planet. Traditionally it is believed that strong Mars influence on the houses connected to family and partnership can bring:

  • Disagreements or ego clashes between partners
  • Delays in finding a suitable match
  • Impatience or a short temper

This is why many families check Sevvai Dosham during marriage matching (porutham).

Does everyone with Sevvai Dosham face problems?

No. A chart has to be read as a whole. A dosham may be reduced or cancelled in many situations, for example:

  • When both partners have Sevvai Dosham, since it is believed to balance out
  • When Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or in its exalted sign (Capricorn)
  • When benefic planets such as Jupiter aspect Mars or the affected house
  • When the dosham is mild because of the degree or the house placement

A single mark in the chart should never be used to reject a match. An experienced astrologer looks at the full jathagam, the dasha periods and the compatibility together.

Traditional remedies (pariharam)

These are practices followed in Tamil tradition, and many people find them comforting and positive:

  1. Worship Lord Murugan. Visit Murugan temples such as Palani, Thiruchendur or Swamimalai, especially on Tuesdays (Sevvaikizhamai).
  2. Fast or offer prayers on Tuesdays.
  3. Chant the Skanda Sashti Kavasam or Mars mantras with sincere devotion.
  4. Donate red lentils (thuvaram paruppu), red cloth or food on Tuesdays.
  5. Perform a pariharam pooja at a temple on the advice of a trusted priest or astrologer.

Remedies should be chosen to match your chart rather than copied from a list, and nobody should pressure you to spend large sums on them.

When should you consult an astrologer?

Speak to an astrologer if you:

  • Have been told you have the dosham but are unsure how strong it is
  • Are checking marriage compatibility for yourself or a family member
  • Want to know the right timing and remedies for your own chart

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. It is one factor among many in a chart, and in many cases its effect is mild or cancelled.

Traditionally, matching is preferred with a partner who also has the dosham, but a careful reading of both charts can show whether a match is still suitable.

Does Sevvai Dosham go away with age?
Many astrologers believe its effect reduces after the age of 28 to 30, though this depends on the individual chart.

Is there a simple remedy I can start with?
Praying to Lord Murugan on Tuesdays is a gentle, widely followed practice.
