Your Janam Kundli, also called a birth chart or horoscope, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. In Vedic astrology it is the starting point for understanding your personality, strengths, challenges and the timing of important life events.
This guide explains what a Kundli contains and how astrologers read it, so you can follow your next consultation with confidence.
What Is a Janam Kundli?
A Kundli is a chart showing where the Sun, Moon and other planets were placed across the twelve zodiac signs when you were born. Because the sky is different at every moment and location, no two Kundlis are exactly alike.
To prepare an accurate Kundli you need:
- Date of birth
- Exact time of birth (even a few minutes can change the chart)
- Place of birth
If you are unsure of your birth time, check your birth certificate or hospital records, or ask a family elder. Astrologers can also use birth time rectification in some cases.
The Main Parts of a Birth Chart
1. The Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It forms the first house and shapes your outlook, temperament and the way you approach life.
2. The 12 Houses (Bhavas)
Each house represents an area of life:
| House | Area of life |
|---|---|
| 1st | Self, personality, health |
| 2nd | Wealth, family, speech |
| 3rd | Courage, siblings, communication |
| 4th | Home, mother, property |
| 5th | Education, children, creativity |
| 6th | Work, service, challenges |
| 7th | Marriage, partnerships |
| 8th | Transformation, longevity |
| 9th | Luck, dharma, higher learning |
| 10th | Career, status |
| 11th | Gains, friendships, goals |
| 12th | Expenses, foreign travel, spirituality |
3. The Nine Planets (Navagraha)
The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu each carry their own themes. For example, Jupiter relates to wisdom and growth, Venus to relationships and comforts, and Saturn to discipline and lessons over time.
4. The Moon Sign (Rashi) and Nakshatra
In Vedic astrology the Moon sign is especially important. Your Rashi and Nakshatra (birth star) are widely used for naming, compatibility matching and understanding your emotional nature.
5. Dasha and Transits
The Dasha system divides life into planetary periods, while transits track how planets are moving now relative to your chart. Together they help astrologers discuss timing in areas like career, marriage and education.
How an Astrologer Reads Your Kundli
A good reading looks at the whole chart together, not one planet in isolation. Typically an astrologer will:
- Identify your Lagna and Moon sign.
- Look at which planets sit in which houses, and which houses they rule.
- Study the relationships (aspects and conjunctions) between planets.
- Check your current Dasha and major transits.
- Relate all of this to the questions you came with.
Common Questions Kundli Readings Help With
- Career direction and job changes
- Marriage timing and Kundli matching
- Education and higher studies
- Business decisions and auspicious timing (muhurat)
- Understanding recurring challenges and suggested remedies
Astrology is best used as guidance for reflection and planning, not as a replacement for medical, legal or financial advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the exact birth time really necessary?
Yes. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and house placements depend on it, so the more accurate the time, the more reliable the chart.
What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and emphasises the Moon sign, Nakshatras and Dashas, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and focuses mainly on the Sun sign.
Can I get my Kundli read online?
Yes. With your birth details, an astrologer can prepare and discuss your chart over a call or video session from anywhere in India or abroad.
How often should I review my Kundli?
Many people consult at major life decisions, or when a new Dasha begins.
